Consciousness is often something we take for granted. We live. We breathe. We think. We exist. If consciousness is a relatively basic function among all humans, why should we even study it in the first place? One important reason is that there are people who have disorders of consciousness. And for a long time, these disorders of consciousness were misunderstood and under-researched.
